  • I have a problem...

I have a problem with the coverage and portrayal of our President-elect, Barack Obama.

In the last few weeks, I can count the number of times I have heard Obama described as biracial on one finger. He's always described as black, or African-American.

I do not understand why his biracial status is basically omitted from the discussion, and I also do not understand why it appears that he hasn't done anything to correct the omission.

For those reading who don't know me, I'll tell you why this bothers me so much: I am biracial.

I am half white, half Japanese. Like Obama, it's not terribly obvious to someone who looks at me. Most of my physical characteristics are Asian -- the skin tone, the hair color, the eye color, etc.

In fact, when strangers who do not know my true ethnicity describe me, I'm not even always described as Asian. But I'm never described as white.

This doesn't bother me, especially when people haven't had a chance to learn about my ethnicity. I was bothered as a child when some other kids thought I was Native American and called me a mild racial slur, but that's a different story.

But if I was in the international spotlight, and everyone called me Japanese, and omitted the physical and psychological role my white mother played in my development as a person, I'd be offended, because by omitting that, people would be dismissing her role in who I am. And I wouldn't let it slide. I'd be sure to correct them.

  • What I hate about DirecTV

I should have written this some time ago, but at least I'm getting around to it.

By and large, I love my DirecTV. Channels, picture quality, sound quality, reliability, all those are wonderful.

But the still-lingering absence of providing my local channels in HD is absolutely infuriating.

When we moved into our new house over 2 years ago, our first purchase was an HDTV. And we had our DirecTV moved from the old house to the new one.

When the installer got us hooked up with the HD receiver to get HD channels, he told us that within 6 months (the end of 2006), our market should be getting local channels in HD.

We're now closing in on the end of 2008, and still no HD local channels. And according to the latest press release from DirecTV, we won't be getting them until next year at the earliest.

What really makes me mad is that Lexington is the 64th largest TV market, and by the end of the year, DirecTV will have local HD channels available for over 120 markets. So our market is getting passed over. By a long ways.

I have contacted DirecTV a number of times about this, and can get nothing more than assurances that we will get local HD channels before I die, presuming I live to a ripe old age.

It might not bother me as much if my antenna picked up the HD channels completely and reliably. But CBS comes through occasionally, NBC is good more often than not, and ABC is the most reliable signal. But I can't get FOX at all.

While I'll never, ever go back to cable, I've seriously thought about going to Dish Network if only they offered the same HD channels that I'm getting now. But they don't offer my local channels in HD, either.

  • Reveling in the Cubs' misery

    I hate the Cubs.

    Always.

As most of you who have read this for any period of time know, I'm a Milwaukee Brewer fan. I've been a Brewer fan since 1980. And as lean as the last 26 years have been, I stuck with them -- didn't abandon them for some other team like some people do when the team of their childhood struggles for a few decades.

Even so, it pained me to have to 'root' for the Cubs to win some games against the Mets during the last week of the season so Milwaukee could get into the wild card race.

Last night was good for me on two fronts. The Brewers, who had to dig out of an 0-2 hole the last time they were in the playoffs, won a game. (Realistically, I don't expect the Brew Crew to reach the World Series, I'm just glad they broke the playoff drought.) And the hated Cubs got swept out of the playoffs by a Dodger team NOBODY picked to advance. And the Dodgers beat the Cubs in every single aspect of the game. Humbled them, broke their spirit, embarassed them, treated them like Cubs should be treated.

So today, if you're a shell-shocked Cubs fan, hahahahahahahahahahaha.

And you can say whatever you want in return, but you have to live with this: The Brewers weren't a favorite to win the World Series, and the Brewers aren't getting swept out of the playoffs by what most everyone thought was an inferior team.
